In 1943, Patiala state had three District and Sessions Judges’ posts at Patiala, Sunam, and Barnala. However, the District and Sessions Judge’s headquarters in Barnala was situated at Bathinda. Raja Shiv Dayal Singh served as the District and Sessions Judge in Patiala, while Shri Kartar Singh Sandhu held the same position in Bathinda. The courts in Patiala State were divided into Naib Nazim Faujdari and Naib Nazim Diwani. The control of Naib Nazim Diwani fell under the District and Sessions Judge, while Naib Nazim Faujdari was under the Nazim (now referred to as Deputy Commissioner).
In 1947 the court of the District and Sessions Judge at Bathinda shifted from “Qila Mubarak” to “Muslim High School” until 1954, when it was shifted to the old court premises at the Civil Station. PEPSU was established in 1948, leading to the creation of various District and Sessions Judge posts in various areas including Bathinda. Additionally, the roles of Additional District Magistrates were reorganized as Chief Judicial Magistrates, while Naib Nazim Faujdari and Naib Nazim Diwani were merged into Deputy Judge-cum-Judicial Magistrates.
The construction of the new Judicial Courts Complex in Bathinda, comprising three blocks and covering 224,000 square feet, was completed to enhance judicial infrastructure. This modern facility, equipped with amenities like air conditioning, CCTV cameras, electric display panels, and parking spaces, aims to facilitate the efficient functioning of the judicial system and provide convenience to litigants, advocates, and the public.
