Gujarat State was established on 14 May 1960, after being carved out of the erstwhile Bombay State. Initially, the state comprised 15 districts, each with its own District and Sessions Judge, and Mahesana was among these original districts. The foundation of Mahesana town was laid by Mesaji Chavada, who placed the idol of Goddess “Toranvali Mataji” in the year 1358 / Samvat 1414, on Bhadarva Sud Dasham.

This event was later chronicled by Poet Jaysinh Brahmbhatt in a poem written in 1932. According to historians, the Gaekwads established their state at Vadodara, and for administering North Gujarat, they initially chose Patan as the capital. However, due to its distance, they later selected Kadi as the capital of the northern region. In 1902, the capital of the Gayakwad Prant was shifted to Mahesana, and at that time, the northern region included eight divisions: (1) Dahegam, (2) Aantarsuba, (3) Kadi, (4) Patan, (5) Vadnagar, (6) Visnagar, (7) Kheralu, and (8) Vijapur.
