Emperor Ashoka is believed to have stayed here during his Ujjain conquest, giving Ashoknagar its name.

By the 8th-9th century, it came under the Pratiharas, whose descendant Raja Kirtipal founded Chanderi. The region saw invasions by Mahmood Ghaznavi and later came under the Delhi Sultanate, ruled by Turks, Afghans, and Mughals. Raja Mardan Singh of Chanderi made a supreme sacrifice during the 1857-58 freedom struggle.
