Established on 15th August 2003, Burhanpur District was carved out of the southern part of Khandwa District. The Tapti River flows across the district from east to west. The pass through the Satpura Range, connecting Burhanpur and Khandwa, is a key route linking northern and southern India. The Asirgarh Fort, which overlooks this pass, is famously referred to as the “Key to the Deccan.”

Burhanpur District comprises two development blocks, Burhanpur and Khaknar, and three tehsils—Nepanagar, Burhanpur, and Khaknar. The district is part of the Indore Division. Shahpur, a major town located just 10 km from Burhanpur, is considered the most developed town in the district.
