Before the independence of India, the executive and judicial functions in Datia district were under the ruling king. The king as the head of the judicial system was supported by the Diwan, who managed judicial matters, while feudal lords, Sikdars and military officers handled minor issues and military administration. Under the modern judicial system, Datia was initially part of Chhatarpur civil district, which included Tikamgarh and Datia, with its main bench at Chhatarpur.

A separate District and Sessions Judge’s court was established at Datia on 15 July 1978, in which Shri BD Bajpai served as the first District Judge till 5 February 1979. Chief Judicial Magistrate Shri NH Khan also served during this period. Initially, the court operated from Rajgarh Fort. Apart from this, Tehsil Court Sewdha was constituted on 01 December 1997 and Bhander Tehsil was separated from Gwalior Civil District and included in Datia District on 01 March 1996.
