The District and Sessions Court of Ratlam has a rich history, operating continuously since 1920. During the princely era, twelve states of the Malwa region shared a rotating High Court, presided over by a “Puny Judge,” with hearings held at the Moti Mahal. One notable figure was Mr. Ratan Lal from Dhar State. Special rules for hearing cases, documented in the book “Ain Civil,” guided the judicial process at the time. The court initially operated from a small corridor building known as “Shrimali Vas,” later used as a government school. After independence, the construction of a new court building was completed on 2 October 1960, and inaugurated by Chief Justice P.V. Dikshit and Chief Minister Dr. Kailashnath Katju.

The Ratlam Court building, now classified as a Heritage Court Building, is shaped like the letter “L” and originally housed three courtrooms. Over the years, Jhabua, Mandsaur, and Neemuch districts were removed from their jurisdiction. The court also played a pivotal role in public interest litigation, with lawyer Vardechand Porwal securing a Supreme Court ruling in 1980, ensuring urban bodies across the country provide essential public services.
