The Judgeship of Rohtas was established in 1978, six years after the formation of Rohtas District. Inaugurated on 23 December 1978 by Hon’ble Chief Justice Mr. K.B.N. Singh of the Patna High Court, the Judgeship initially encompassed areas now under Bhojpur, Buxar, and Kaimur Judgeships. The headquarters of Rohtas Judgeship is at Sasaram, with sub-divisional units at Bikramganj (inaugurated on 25th September 2004) and Dehri-On-Sone (inaugurated on 7th April 2012).

Mr. Madan Mohan Prasad No.-1 was the first District & Sessions Judge of this Judgeship. The present District & Sessions Judge-cum-Chairman, Legal Services Authority, Rohtas is Sri Anuj Kumar Jain, who has been in office since 6 April 2024. Initially, the Judgeship was under the administrative control of the Patna High Court. The jurisdiction of the Judgeship of Rohtas was bounded by the Ganga River in the north, the Sone River in the east and south, the Karamnasa River in the northwest, and the Mirzapur district of U.P. in the west.
