Under the Madhya Pradesh government policy, a District Judge was appointed in Shajapur on 12 April 1975, with Shri K.D. Dighe served as the first District Judge. Initially, all courts were located in the fort, but due to limited space and the deteriorating condition of the old building, a new court complex was constructed near the Collectorate.

The District Court and its subordinate courts began operating from the new building in Lalghati on 4 May 1997. Currently, apart from the main headquarters in Shajapur, there is also a tehsil court in Shujalpur under the jurisdiction of the Shajapur District Court.
