In the state of Uttarakhand, District Courts are set up by the State Government in consultation with the High Court, taking into account factors like the number of cases, the topography of the area, and the population distribution in each district. Additionally, some Tehsil Headquarters have outlying courts. The district-level judicial system operates in three tiers, and these courts function under the administrative and supervisory control of the State High Court.
The highest court in each district is the District and Sessions Judge’s Court. This is the main court for civil matters, deriving its authority from the Bengal, Agra, and Assam Civil Courts Act of 1887, similar to other civil courts in the state. It also serves as a sessions court, where criminal cases are tried.
