The Jalpaiguri-Malda-West Dinajpur judgeship was established in 1890 during British rule. In 1981, the Malda-West Dinajpur judgeship was separated from it, followed by the bifurcation of West Dinajpur from Malda-West Dinajpur on 16th May 1983. West Dinajpur was further divided into Dakshin Dinajpur and Uttar Dinajpur judgeships on 24th September 1992. A Sub-Divisional Court for Gangarampur Sub-Division was established on 21st September 1998 at Buniadpur under the Dakshin Dinajpur District Court, Balurghat.
