The history of Darbhanga dates back to the Ramayana and Mahabharata periods. Vedic sources indicate that the Videhas, of Aryan descent, migrated from the banks of Saraswati in Punjab to the area guided by Agni, the God of Fire. They established settlements, leading to the flourishing of the Videha kingdom, ruled by a line of kings called Janaks. Among them, King Mithi was notable, and the region was named Mithila in his honour. King Janak Sirdhwaja, Sita’s father, was another distinguished ruler, renowned for his scholarship. He patronised many learned men, including Yagyavalkya and Gautam, whose works remain significant in Hindu philosophy.

Traditions also link this area with Kapil Muni, the proponent of the Sankhya philosophy, and the Pandavas, believed to have stayed here during their exile. Renowned scholars like Vidyapati, Kumaril Bhatt, Mandan Mishra, and others hailed from this region.

The name Darbhanga is believed to have been derived from its principal town, allegedly founded by Darbhangi Khan, or from Dwar-Banga, meaning “Gateway to Bengal”. Situated in the heart of Mithilanchal, Darbhanga became a separate district in 1875 under British rule. It served as part of Patna Division until 1908 and became a Divisional headquarters in 1972.
