The Court of Small Causes, Mumbai, was established under the Presidency Small Causes Courts Act, of 1882. The Court follows the procedures laid down by this Act, the Civil Manual, 1986, and the Code of Civil Procedure, 1908. As of 1 January 2022, the Court has a sanctioned strength of 44 Judicial Officers, with a working strength of 40. The Chief Judge heads the administration, and the Registrar acts as the Chief Ministerial Officer, with additional powers like hearing undefended suits and interlocutory applications.

The Court also has exclusive jurisdiction under the Maharashtra Rent Control Act, 1999, and handles matters under the Bombay Municipal Corporation Act, 1888. The Head Office is located at Dhobi Talao, Mumbai, covering territorial jurisdiction from Colaba to Mulund. The Branch Office is in Bandra (East) and handles matters from Mahim to Dahisar.
