The Motor Accident Claims Tribunal was established on 2 December 1959 as part of the City Civil & Sessions Court. Later, in June 1962, it became an independent court at Jehangir Building, Kalaghoda, Mumbai. Over the years, additional courts were created to handle the increasing number of cases: the Second Court in 1972, the Third and Fourth in 1980 and 1983, and the Fifth in July 2002.
By December 2003, three more courts were established, bringing the total to eight. Initially, due to space constraints, four of these courts operated from the Annex Building of the Court of Small Causes. However, after resolving some litigation issues, all eight courts were consolidated under one roof at 9, Hazarimal Somani Marg, Opposite Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Mumbai. This single-storied barrack-like structure, spanning about 6500 sq. ft., is maintained by the PWD and also houses the State Human Rights Commission and the Consumer Commission.
