Sindhudurg District, located in the southern part of the Konkan region, is bordered by the Arabian Sea to the west and the Sahyadri Mountains to the east. Formed on May 1, 1981, by carving out six talukas from Ratnagiri District—Kudal, Vengurla, Sawantwadi, Malvan, Kankavli, and Devgad—it was later expanded to include Vaibhavwadi and Dodamarg, totaling eight talukas. The district spans approximately 130 km from north to south and 40 km from east to west. It is flanked by Kolhapur District to the east, Ratnagiri District to the north, Goa to the south, and the Arabian Sea to the west, with a 127 km coastal stretch.

The District and Sessions Court of Sindhudurg began operations on 27 January 1997, in Oros, a central village in Kudal Taluka. The inauguration of the new court building took place on 25 January 1997, officiated by Justice M.B. Shah, the then Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. The district has five principal courts and seven taluka courts, including Gram Nyayalayas in Vaibhavwadi.
