Dhanbad, known as the Coal Capital of India, has one of the busiest judgeships in the state. The first civil court was established in 1901 at Baghsuma, near Govindpur, and later moved to Hirapur, Dhanbad, in 1908. Sri Jnananendra Chandra Banerjee served as the first permanent Munsif. Over the years, the judiciary expanded, with the Court of Subordinate Judges being established in 1917, and Sri Brajendra Kumar Ghosh becoming the first Subordinate Judge.
The Subordinate Judges were vested with criminal and revenue powers, including handling insolvency cases and land acquisitions. In 1956, a separate judgeship for Dhanbad was created, with Sri R. Saran as the first District Judge. Post the formation of Jharkhand in 2000, Dhanbad remained a key judicial hub. At present, the judgeship has been divided between two Subordinate Judges and two Munsifs to manage the workload across different police stations.
