The Ernakulam Court has a rich history dating back to British colonial rule. In 1813, a Valia or Huzur Court was established in Ernakulam, presided over by a Hindu, a Christian judge, and a Sastri, alongside the Dewan. This court dealt with various disputes, ensuring justice based on Dharma Sastras and local customs. In 1818, the court became an Appeal Court, with a subordinate court moved from Tripunithura to Ernakulam, renamed the Zilla Court of Anjikaimal.
This court handled cases, with appeals directed to the Higher Appeal Court. Over time, various reforms were introduced, such as the establishment of the Munsiff’s Court in 1861 for smaller civil disputes. By 1900, the Zilla Court was re-designated as the District Court, and the Raja’s Court of Appeal was abolished. These changes played a key role in shaping the modern judicial structure of Ernakulam.
