The former Garhwa Subdivision of Palamau District, originally comprising eight blocks, became a separate district named “Garhwa” on 1st April 1991. Currently, Garhwa district is part of Palamau Commissionery, consisting of fourteen blocks, sixteen police stations, and three sub-divisions: Garhwa, Nagar Untari, and Ranka. The Garhwa Sub-Divisional Court has been operational since 18th August 1961, under the Sessions Division of Palamau, with the Sub-Divisional Officer (S.D.O.) of Garhwa holding both civil and criminal jurisdiction.
In 1971, a permanent Munsif Court was established with civil powers, and the S.D.J.M. Court was granted criminal powers. Later, in 1983, the A.C.J.M. Court was also established. The Garhwa Judgeship’s Sessions Division began functioning on 25th June 2001, with its inauguration by Hon’ble Justice (Retd.) Deoki Nandan Prasad. Sri Pradeep Kumar was appointed the first District and Sessions Judge of Garhwa Judgeship. The Family Court of Garhwa Judgeship was established on 2nd May 2009.
