Situated at an altitude of 1,250 meters, Kalimpong enjoys a temperate climate year-round. After Independence, a house named “Nirmalaya” at 9th Mile, Kalimpong, owned by Smt. Kabita Roy, was taken on rent by the Judicial Department of the Government of West Bengal to house the Civil Court of Munsif from 1st December 1948. The permanent Munsif Court began in 1970 and functioned under Jalpaiguri District Court until 1979. Later, the Court of S.D.J.M. was located in the S.D.O. building before moving to Kalimpong Municipality on 22nd March 1985.
The current Court building, inaugurated on 7 July 1997, is located near the S.D.O.’s office. On 17 March 2018, Kalimpong District Judiciary and its separate Sessions Division were formally inaugurated by Hon’ble Justice Jyotirmay Bhattacharya and other dignitaries in the presence of Shri Moloy Ghatak, Minister of Law and Judicial Department, West Bengal.
