Katihar district, known as the land of bananas, was established on 2nd October 1973, following its separation from the Purnea district. Located at 25.53° N and 87.58° E, Katihar has an average elevation of 20 meters. The district’s main rivers include the mighty Ganga (forming the southern boundary, 25 kilometers from Katihar town), the magnificent Kosi (western boundary, 30 kilometers from Katihar town), and the beautiful Mahananda, along with several smaller rivers like Kari Kosi (which flows by Katihar town) and Kamla. The Kosi, often referred to as the “Sorrow of Bihar,” merges with the Ganga at Katihar District’s southwest boundary.

Katihar shares its boundary with two states: Jharkhand to the south and West Bengal to the east. Bangladesh is approximately 80 kilometers east of Katihar town, while Nepal is about 100 kilometers to the north. There is rail connectivity from Katihar railway station to both these borders. The district’s proximity to the Himalayas in the north, the Jharkhand plateau in the south, and the presence of multiple rivers, along with good rainfall, contribute to a distinct and generally pleasant climate throughout the year. However, the district experiences annual flooding during the rainy season.
