Koderma district was formed on 10 April 1994 after it was split from Hazaribagh district. Located in the Chotanagpur Plateau at 397 m above sea level, it has a varied landscape of hills, plains, and dunes. The northern part is home to the Koderma Reserve Forest, which has the Debor Valley, the highest peak in the district at 677 m, marking the boundary between Jharkhand and Bihar.
The Barakar River flows from west to east, supporting the Telaiya Dam and Hydel Project. Major tributaries include the Ponchkhara, Keso, and Akto rivers. The Koderma Bench was established on 26 June 2001, with 13 sanctioned courts in two buildings. Earlier, judicial sessions were held in Hazaribagh
