The District Court of Nadia was established in 1871 during British rule. The land for its construction was donated by the Waqf Board in 1965. Initially, the court operated with five sub-divisions: Krishnagar, Ranaghat, Kushtia, Meherpur, and Chuadanga. However, following the partition of India in 1947, the sub-divisions of Kushtia, Meherpur, and Chuadanga were excluded as they became part of East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). In 1974, the Nabadwip Chowki Court was established under Nadia judgeship, while the Sub-Divisional Courts in Kalyani and Tehatta began functioning in 1983 and 2004, respectively.
In 1983, construction of a new five-storey criminal court building commenced, and the criminal courts were relocated there from their earlier site near the Superintendent of Police’s office, about 2 km from the District Court building. Initially, the judgeship had four sessions courts, including the District & Sessions Judge, one Additional District & Sessions Judge, two Assistant Sessions Judges, and three Munsifs (including one Additional Munsif) until 1979. Over time, the number of courts in the district has increased significantly to meet growing judicial needs.
