Uttar Dinajpur District, carved out of West Dinajpur on 1 April 1992, spans 3,142 sq. km with two sub-divisions, Raiganj and Islampur, separated by 110 km. Known for its rich flora and fauna, the district boasts the Kulik Bird Sanctuary, Asia’s largest. Stretching from Chopra in the north, a vital link to India’s Northeast, to Itahar Rajbari in the south, it holds historical significance as the birthplace of Maharaja Danujmardan Ganesh and a center of the Sannyasi Rebellion and Quit India Movement.
Bordering Bangladesh with a 407.8 km stretch, Uttar Dinajpur is well-connected via NH-27, NH-12, and railways. The Radhikapur-Birol railway corridor which reopened in 2017, serves as a freight link, while the district hosts three land customs stations, only one operational.
