Paschim Bardhaman is an urban mining-industrial district in West Bengal, with Asansol as its headquarters. Formed in 2017 after the bifurcation of Bardhaman district, it comprises two subdivisions: Asansol Sadar and Durgapur. The district is known for its coal reserves, which led to industrialization, though much of its forests have been cleared. The area is part of the Chota Nagpur plateau, with rocky, undulating terrain. Famous poet Kazi Nazrul Islam was born in Churulia, Asansol, on 25 May 1899.
The district is home to key institutions like Chittaranjan Locomotive Works and Kazi Nazrul University. The Maa Kalyaneshwari temple, a center of Shakti worship, is over 500 years old. The Maithon Hydel Power Station, an underground plant, is a unique feature of the region. The Asansol Durgapur Police Commissionerate and District Court function from Asansol, handling law and order as well as legal services for the region.
