According to the L.S.S.O’ Malleys Bihar & Orissa District Gazetteers (revised edition 1924), the new district of Patna was established in 1825 with consistent boundaries for both revenue and police purposes, remaining the same until 1865. It also mentions that the first Magistrate of Patna was Charles Francis Grand. The Patna Judgeship seems to have been formed between 1757 and 1783, as evidenced by a judgment from 1783 available in the District Judge’s Record Room of Patna Judgeship. Nalanda (Biharsharif) was initially a sub-division under the Patna Judgeship and was later established as a separate Judgeship in 1978.
