Rajgarh District was formed in 1976, originally part of the Eastern District of Rajgarh District Court, Guna. Since its establishment in July 1976, the northern part of Rajgarh District has included the tehsils of Biaora, Narsinghgarh, Khilchipur, and Jirapur, which are part of the revenue district of Rajgarh. The Sarangpur tehsil, which was previously under the jurisdiction of the revenue district of Shajapur, was transferred to Rajgarh District on 1 April 2012, following an order by the Honorable High Court of Madhya Pradesh, Jabalpur.

The first District and Sessions Judge of Rajgarh District Court was Mr. V.K. Pandey, who took charge on 15 July 1976. At present, Mr. Rajiv Karmahe serves as the Principal District and Sessions Judge, having assumed office on 6 November 2023.
