North Garo Hills, the northernmost part of the Garo Hills region, serves as the gateway to the entire area and shares a border with Assam. The district’s population is a mix of indigenous Garo tribes and other smaller tribes, including Rabhas, Hajongs, Kacharis, and Boros. The region experiences a subtropical climate with adequate rainfall, and its people have an ethnic blend of Indo-Burmese-Tibetan ancestry.
Resubelpara, the district’s headquarters, has seen significant administrative developments since 1952, when it was first established as a Development Block by the Government of Assam. It was later upgraded to a full-fledged district on 27 July 2012 by Dr. Mukul Sangma, the then Chief Minister of Meghalaya.
By Article 50 of the Indian Constitution, the judiciary was separated from the executive in North Garo Hills on 2 September 2020, marking a historic day for both the district and the judiciary in Meghalaya.
