The Hajipur Judgeship was established as a separate Sessions division on 19 May 1979, with its inauguration by Acting Chief Justice Hon’ble Sarwar Ali. Originally part of the Muzaffarpur Judgeship, it became a distinct entity with Sri Sahdeo Singh as its first District & Sessions Judge. The current District Judge, Sri Om Prakash Singh, is the 29th in succession. Before its judgeship status, the district was notified on 12 October 1972. Named VAISHALI, after the historical place 40 km from Hajipur, the district draws its name from King Vaishalik of the Ramayana and is renowned for the world’s first democracy established by the Lichhavis. Vaishali is celebrated as the birthplace of Lord Mahavir and was visited thrice by Lord Buddha, who announced his approaching Mahaparinirwan here. The court dancer Amrapali, who later embraced Buddhism, also hails from Vaishali. Poet Ramdhari Singh Dinakar has extolled its glory in his works.
Currently, 51 Judicial officers, including the Principal Judge of the Family Court and the Probationary Civil Judge (Junior Division), are posted in the Vaishali Judgeship. Hajipur, named after Sahabuddin Illiyas Shah Haji, the Nawab of Bengal in 1345 AD, was formerly known as Harirpur or Hastipur. Located on the eastern bank of the Gandak River and the southern bank of the Ganga, it became a revenue Subdivision in 1865 during British rule.
