The Kalpetta Judicial District was established on 15 December 1984, after the creation of the Wayanad District on 1 November 1980. Before this, the region’s courts were part of the Kozhikode and Thalassery Judicial Districts. Initially, only the Kalpetta and Mananthavady courts functioned, with the former under Kozhikode and the latter under Thalassery.
Following the formation of the Kalpetta Judicial District, additional courts were integrated, including the District Court, Kalpetta, Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court, and Sub Court in Sulthan Bathery. Over time, more courts were added, such as the Family Court and courts for SC/ST Act cases. Additionally, the District Legal Services Authority and mediation centers in Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery, and Mananthavady support legal services in the district.
