Singhbhum, located in present-day Jharkhand, is one of the oldest districts in erstwhile Bihar and present-day Jharkhand. Chaibasa, located on the banks of the Roro River, has served as the district headquarters since the British period. On 16 November 1990, Singhbhum was divided into two parts – Singhbhum East, headquartered at Jamshedpur, and Singhbhum West, headquartered at Chaibasa. In 2001, Singhbhum West was further divided into Seraikela-Kharsawan and West Singhbhum. The name ‘Singhbhum’ is possibly derived from the kings of Porahat or the local deity Singbonga.
The Chaibasa court, became the headquarters of the Kolhan Estate under the South West Frontier Agency in 1837, with administrative responsibilities given to the local Mankis and Mundas. The area was reorganized into a separate civil district and sessions division in 1910. Until 1960, Singhbhum had its own Judge’s Office with its headquarters at Chaibasa, and Shri Mahendra Prasad Verma was the first District & Sessions Judge.
