South West Garo Hills was officially formed as a district in the state of Meghalaya on 7 August 2012. The District and Sessions Court was established and inaugurated on 24 February 2017 by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr Mukul Sangma, and the Hon’ble Chief Justice, Mr Justice Dinesh Maheshwari of the High Court of Meghalaya, in the esteemed presence of the Hon’ble Law Minister Smti Roshan Warjri, Hon’ble Mr Justice S.R. Sen, Judge of the High Court of Meghalaya, Hon’ble Mr. Justice V.P. Vaish, Judge of the High Court of Meghalaya, and other distinguished officials.
Before this, judicial functions were carried out by the Executive. The foundation stone for the proposed court building (Office of District and Sessions Judge) was laid, and a Lok Adalat with a symbolic handing-over ceremony was held on 24 February 2017 to mark the separation of the judiciary from the executive in the district. Currently, the Office of the District and Sessions Judge is housed in the New Court Building, where Shri A.M. Ripnar, District and Sessions Judge, West Garo Hills, in charge of South West Garo Hills, Smt Nausica M Sangma, Chief Judicial Magistrate in charge of South West Garo Hills, and Shri L.L.M. Rambai, Judicial Magistrate First Class, are stationed. On 10 December 2022, the Court was shifted to its new, separate building.
