Balaghat district, located in the southern part of Jabalpur division of Madhya Pradesh, covers an area of ​​9,245 sq km. It is situated in the southeastern part of the Satpura Range and the upper Wainganga River valley. Balaghat, established in 1867 by combining parts of Bhandara, Mandla and Seoni districts, became an independent district in 1956. The name of the district means “above the Ghats or passes” and its headquarters, originally called “Burha”, was later renamed Balaghat.

Administratively, the district is divided into six tehsils: Balaghat, Waraseoni, Baihar, Lanji, Katangi and Kiranpur. Balaghat became a separate judicial district on 14 November 1969, with Shri S.N. Johri as the first District and Sessions Judge. The heritage district court building, built in 1874, was renovated in 2016 and a new building was added in 1992 to accommodate the growing number of litigation. Civil courts function in Varseoni, Baihar, Katangi, and Lanji tehsils.
