Barwani district, formed on 25 May 1998, was carved out of Khargone (West Nimar) in Madhya Pradesh. Barwani, located in the southwestern part of the state, is bounded by the Narmada River on the north and surrounded by the Satpura and Vindhyachal ranges. The name “Barwani” originates from “bar”, which refers to the forests that surround the city, and “wani”, an old word for garden. Historically, Barwani was the capital of the Barwani princely state, which was ruled by the Rana dynasty from the 13th century.

Known as the “Paris of Nimar” before independence, it is also famous for the Jain pilgrimage site Baavangaza. Tir-Gola, a historical monument, is located on the Khandwa-Baroda Road, commemorating the late son of Raja Ranjit Singh. The Barwani state, founded by a Sisodia prince in the 9th century, declined in power due to the Maratha invasions but remained independent until its merger into Madhya Pradesh after independence.
