Before the creation of a separate judgeship for Hazaribagh District on 3 April 1949, civil justice was administered by the Judicial Commissioner of Chotanagpur, headquartered in Ranchi, along with the Deputy Commissioner, Sub-Judge, and two Munsifs at Hazaribagh and Giridih. The Munsif of Giridih also handled rent suits as a Deputy Collector. Criminal justice was overseen by the Judicial Commissioner, Deputy Commissioner, Magistrates, and Honorary Magistrates, with appeals being heard by the Judicial Commissioner.
Post-1949, the Hazaribagh judgeship comprised a District Judge, Sub-Judge, and two Munsifs for civil cases, and a Sessions Judge, Assistant Sessions Judge, and Magistrates for criminal cases. Notably, many cases under the Motor Vehicle Act arose due to accidents on hilly roads. The District’s judicial staff and operations were further structured for effective case management.
