Kasaragod, located in the northernmost part of Kerala, was formed on 24th May 1984, following the order GO (MS) No. 520/84/RD. It comprises the Hosdurg and Kasaragod taluks, which were part of the undivided Kannur District. To the east, it borders the Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada districts of Karnataka, the Arabian Sea to the west, and Karnataka’s Kannada district to the north. Kasaragod has traces of human settlements dating back to the Stone Age, with evidence of ancient pottery, copper, and ironworks. The district is home to various tribal communities like Korangar, Malakkudi, Mavilar, and Velan.
The region also has historical connections to Buddhism and Jainism, with Vedic influences growing stronger over time. Kasaragod was once a key trade center for Arab travelers and Portuguese explorer Barbosa noted its trade connections in 1514. The Ananthapuram Temple near Kumbala, the only lake temple in Kerala, is believed to be the original seat of the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple.
