Initially, the Sadar Dewani Adalat and Sadar Nizamat Adalat operated from Fort Street, later moving to a colonnaded structure near the Presidency General Hospital. The Mayor’s Court, established in 1728, functioned at various locations before being replaced by the Supreme Court of Judicature at Fort William in 1774 under the Regulating Act of 1773. The Calcutta High Court, built in 1872, designed by Walter Granville in Gothic style, stands as a heritage landmark of the city.
The Bankshall Court Complex, housing courts like the City Sessions Court and Fast Track Courts, includes two heritage buildings and a newer structure, Bichar Bhawan. Proposals have been made to extend Bichar Bhawan to relocate Municipal Magistrate Courts currently in rented premises.
