The Mokokchung District Court began operating in 1976 after relocating from Dimapur, initially with just one court, the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, led by Shri R S Bedi as the Chief Judicial Magistrate. The court staff comprised one Peshkar and three Bench Assistants, along with an Assistant Public Prosecutor who also served the districts of Mon, Tuensang, Zunheboto, and Wokha. At that time, 22 criminal cases and 15 civil cases were pending trial, with 21 cases under investigation and 17 cases held in abeyance awaiting likely withdrawal.
Today, the Mokokchung District Court functions with a District & Sessions Judge, a Chief Judicial Magistrate, and a Civil Judge (Junior), who together oversee both civil and criminal justice within the district.
