Nawada, originally a subdivision of Gaya district, became a separate revenue district in 1973. The Nawada Judgeship was established on 21 January 1984, with Sri Phanindra Kumar Sharan as the first District and Sessions Judge. Nawada is bordered by Gaya district to the west, known for its Hindu religious significance, and Jamui district to the east, which was previously a subdivision of Munger. The southern border of Nawada touches the Koderma district in Jharkhand.

Nawada is important in Jainism, as Sri Gautam Swami, Lord Mahavir’s first disciple, attained Kaivalya at Gunawan village near Nawada town.
