Nuapada was originally part of the Khariar princely state within the Mahasamund Tahasil under Raipur District, later becoming a subdivision of Sambalpur District in 1936. Initially, a Deputy Commissioner at Nuapada held both executive and judicial powers, supported by the Second Officer who acted as a Judicial Magistrate handling criminal cases. In 1967, the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate’s Court was established in Nuapada, with the Munsif from nearby regions camping periodically to handle civil disputes. The Nuapada BAR, formed in 1948, is the oldest in the undivided Kalahandi district, evolving into the District BAR Association in 1993.
The court infrastructure in Nuapada expanded with the establishment of the Sub-ordinate Judge’s Court on 21 March 1987, followed by the opening of a Judicial Magistrate First Class court to manage the increasing criminal cases. On 27 March 2000, the Addl. District & Sessions Judge Court was inaugurated, with Shri G.B. Pattnaik as its first judge. Nuapada gained its independent judgeship on 7th July 2012, inaugurated by Hon’ble Shri Justice C.R. Dash, and Shri M.S. Dhal was appointed as the first District & Sessions Judge. Additionally, the Gram Nyayalaya was set up in Komna on 11 January 2014 to provide local access to justice. The new District Court building is currently under construction adjacent to the existing one.
