The Jaina Bhagavati Sutra of the 5th century AD mentions Purulia as part of Vajra-bhumi, one of the 16 Mahajanapadas. However, its early history remains unclear until the East India Company gained control over Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa in 1765. In 1805, the Jungle Mahal District, comprising 23 parganas including present-day Purulia, was formed. This district was later reorganized in 1833 into Manbhum District with its headquarters at Manbazar, which was shifted to Purulia in 1838. Initially under special administration, it came under a Deputy Commissioner in 1854.
In 1956, under the States Reorganisation Act, Manbhum District was divided between Bihar and West Bengal, and Purulia became a district on 1 November 1956. Situated at West Bengal’s westernmost edge, Purulia acts as a gateway between industrial hubs and hinterlands, influencing monsoon currents and tourism.
