Ramanathapuram, originally called Ramnad during the British era, was formed in 1910 by merging parts of Madurai and Tirunelveli districts, with Shri J.F. Bryant I.C.S. as its first collector. Post-independence, the district was renamed Ramanathapuram to reflect its Tamil heritage. Known as Mugavai (face) due to the River Vaigai ending its journey here in the Palk Strait, it was trifurcated in 1985 into Sivagangai, Virudhunagar, and Ramanathapuram districts. Its history dates back to 1063 AD under the Cholas, later passing through the Pandya Kingdom, Nayaks of Vijayanagar, and the Sethupathy chieftains.

The 18th century saw disputes over succession, leading to divisions in rule. The British took control in 1795 after deposing Muthuramalinga Sethupathy and abolishing the Zamindari system in 1892. Ramanathapuram witnessed revolts, including those led by the Marudhu Brothers against British rule, which culminated in their capture in 1803.
