The Surendranagar District Court, established in 1950, holds a significant place in the history of Gujarat’s judiciary. The district, originally known as Zalawad, was named after the Zala Rajputs who ruled the region. The town of Surendranagar, which serves as the district headquarters, was previously known as Wadhwan Camp, the base for British Political Agents. In 1946, the town was returned to the Wadhwan ruler and renamed Surendranagar after Shri Surendrasinhji.

The District Court in Surendranagar was built in 1950, and the first District Judge to preside over it was Hon’ble Mr. M.B. Desai. Initially part of Zalawad District, the court became a part of Surendranagar District on 1 April 1959, following the reorganization of states and the renaming of the district. When the State of Bombay was bifurcated on 1 May 1960, Surendranagar became a part of the newly formed Gujarat State. Presently, Mr. L.S. Pirzada has been serving as the Principal District & Sessions Judge of Surendranagar since 1st April 2024.
