Vidisha, renowned for its ancient monuments and historical significance, was known as Bhilsa until 1956. It was renamed Vidisha due to its proximity to the city of great antiquity. The district was established in 1904 by combining the tehsils of Vidisha and Basoda, which were part of the Gwalior state at that time.

Following India’s independence in 1947, the princely state of Gwalior joined the newly formed Madhya Bharat state in 1948. Vidisha District expanded in 1949 with the inclusion of the princely state of Kuwait. In 1956, Vidisha District was reconstituted when Madhya Bharat and Bhopal states, along with the tehsil of Sironj (formerly part of Rajasthan and the princely state of Tonk), were merged into Madhya Pradesh. This reorganization also incorporated Sironj tehsil and the small pargana of Piklone from Bhopal state into Vidisha District.
