Before the separation of the Judiciary from the Executive, civil and criminal powers were vested in the Deputy Commissioner and their Assistants. When the judiciary was separated from the executive on 27 June 2014, the district had 3 police stations, 1 outpost, and 1 check post under its jurisdiction. The Court of the District and Sessions Judge for East Garo Hills District in Williamnagar was established and jointly inaugurated on 27 June 2014 by the then Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Dr. Mukul Sangma, and the then Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Prafulla C. Pant.
The courts are empowered to try cases under the relevant laws, exercising jurisdiction over both civil and criminal matters. Smti. Gasalynn Rani was appointed as the first District and Sessions Judge, Shri. Febroneous Silkam Sangma as the first Chief Judicial Magistrate, Smti. Daphira Sohtun as the first Munsiff and Judicial Magistrate First Class, and Smti. Nathe M. Momin was the first Judicial Magistrate of First Class of the district.
