Deogarh District, also known as Debagarh, was established on 1st January 1994 after being carved out from Sambalpur District. It was once the capital of the Bamanda (or Bamra) princely state during British India, with its rulers belonging to the Ganga Vamsi dynasty, an extended royal family of the Gajapati emperor of Odisha.
The district, located in the Koshal region of western Odisha, shares borders with Angul District to the east and south, Sambalpur District to the west, and Sundargarh District to the north. Its headquarters is in Deogarh town.
