Jharsuguda, one of the 30 districts of Odisha, is known for its rich mineral resources, thriving business, and industrial development. Covering an area of 2,081 square kilometers and having a population of about 514,853, the district was originally part of Sambalpur during the reorganization of the Garhajat States in 1936 under British rule. Jharsuguda became an independent district on 1 April 1994, after the integration of the Zamindari areas of Rampur, Kolabira, Padampur, and Godbhaga. Located in western Odisha, it is strategically located along State Highway No. 10, at a distance of 515 km from Kolkata and 616 km from Nagpur. The Ib River flows through the city to the west and the “Vardane” River to the south.
Jharsuguda was initially under the jurisdiction of the Sambalpur judgeship until 23 September 2011. A separate judgeship was established for Jharsuguda on 24 September 2011, which introduced an independent judicial structure. The newly constituted judgeship initially comprised Additional District and Sessions Judge Court, Chief Judicial Magistrate cum Civil Judge (Senior Division), Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate Court, Civil Judge (Junior Division) Court and two Judicial Magistrate First Class (J.M.F.C.) Courts. Additionally, a Fast Track Court and Nyayadhikari, Gram Nyayalayas were also operational at Lakhanpur. Later, this was expanded to include District and Sessions Judge Court, Civil Judge (Senior Division), and Registrar Court, ensuring a comprehensive judicial system for the district.
