Jamnagar was originally named Navanagar. His Highness Jam Rawal constructed the Darbar Gadh Fort and named the city Navanagar. Later, the heirs of Raja who ruled over the region renamed it Jamnagar. Jamnagar is also known as Chhota Kasi.

Judicial officers were appointed for the first time in Jamnagar District and some of the Talukas through official notifications. The court in Jamnagar was established in the year 1864, initially located near Khambhalia Darwaja. It was later moved to Darbar Gadh. The court, presided over by a Sir Judge with the authority to hear appeals from the taluka courts, was set up in Jamnagar. Consequently, appeals from the taluka courts were directed to the Darbar Gadh Court.

Thus, Jamnagar is proud of its long-standing judicial system, which has been in place for nearly 147 years. The judicial system established by His Highness exemplifies his foresight and the implementation of a well-structured administrative system, ensuring the separation of executive and judiciary to uphold judicial independence and deliver timely justice. Currently, the District Court is located at Lal Bunglow, Jamnagar.
