Khunti has long been synonymous with rebellion and struggle, having played a pivotal role during the historic Birsa movement of 1875. Originally part of Ranchi district, Khunti was established as an administrative subdivision in 1905, following Gumla in 1902 and preceding Simdega in 1915. The region holds a prominent place in history due to its prolonged fight against British rule, led by the revolutionary hero of Jharkhand, Birsa Munda.
Khunti is also well known for its production of lac, a natural resin. A significant portion of India’s lac comes from this area. Lac is a natural polymer produced by a small insect, Kerria lacca (Kerr), which thrives on the shoots of various trees like palas, kusum, and ber. Lac cultivation serves as a secondary source of income for many tribal communities in the Khunti region. With support from the government, NGOs, and voluntary organizations, lac farming has undergone a revitalization, offering a new lease of life to this traditional practice.
