Mayurbhanj district has a well-established judicial system dating back to the pre-independence era. The rulers of Mayurbhanj set up a robust justice delivery system, with prominent figures like Utkalmani Pandit Gopabandhu Das serving as State Pleader in 1909. After Mayurbhanj merged with Odisha on 1 January 1949, the District & Sessions Court at Baripada was established, with Shri P.C. Ghosh as the first District & Sessions Judge.
Currently, the district has a three-tier court system with courts located in the district headquarters (Baripada) and sub-divisional headquarters (Udala, Rairangpur, Karanjia). Additionally, Civil Judge-cum-J.M.F.C. Courts operate at Betnoti, Rasgovindpur, Morada, Jashipur, and Thakurmunda. In total, there are 31 courts functioning in Mayurbhanj. On Constitution Day (26th November 2021), plaques displaying the Preamble and Article 39A were unveiled at various courts for public awareness.
