The name “Bardhaman,” anglicized as Burdwan, originates from the Sanskrit term Vardhamana, meaning prosperity or growth. Its history dates back to 5000 BC during the Mesolithic period. According to Jain scriptures, Bardhaman might have been named after the 24th Jain Tirthankara, Mahavira, who spent time in the region. Alternatively, it is believed that the name signifies a center of prosperity during Aryan expansion. The first epigraphic mention of Bardhaman appears in a 6th-century copper plate found in Mallasarul village.
Archaeological findings reveal that Bardhaman was a hub of organized settlements. Excavations at Pandu Rajar Dhibi and other sites near rivers Ajay and Kopai show evidence of planned towns with streets, citadels, and copper tools, highlighting advanced trade and agriculture. The region later became part of the Maurya and Gupta empires, flourishing as a prominent division in ancient Bengal.
