Thanjavur has a rich history of justice dispensation dating back to the Chola dynasty, with renowned kings like Manuneethi Chozhan and Sibi Chakaravarthi known for their commitment to justice. The Thanjavur District Court was established in 1806, initially covering the districts of Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam. Charles Wood Cock served as the first Zillah Judge from 1807. Due to increasing judicial workload, the court was divided into two Zillah Courts in later years.

The current District Court building was constructed in 1870, and by 1873, it was renamed as the District and Sessions Court. In 1884, it became the Thanjavur District Court. The court celebrated its bicentenary in 2007. Presently, the Thanjavur Principal District Court oversees 40 subordinate courts and employs 710 staff members.
